camaraderie
Two WWI French soldiers help a ‘shell–shocked’ Australian “Digger’ (soldier) negotiate
through thick mud to receive medical treatment after fierce and constant German shelling.
Camaraderie remains a strong aspect between soldiers fighting together and the unwritten
code is ‘never leave a mate behind’.
Today the term ‘shell shock’ is replaced by the modern medical and psychological term
described as ‘Post Traumatic Stress Disorder’ (PTSD) and is a vital medical counselling
service provided by veteran affairs departments for those soldiers returning home from
horrific and devastating war zones.
Suicide rates among those soldiers affected by PTSD have soared in recent years given
the ‘political’ nature of continued multiple deployments of soldiers to war torn regions.
Millions of soldiers during the horrific WWI battles suffered such psychological affects
but very few received any kind of medical assistance and those who were affected
were too ashamed to admit it.
